Illustration Friday: SNOW

Here's a quick illustration friday drawing... .Not the most well put together, but I had a free afternoon and was hoping to pump out a quick drawing.

Somehow, the colors got all sorts of screwy when I uploaded it to the web.  I guess you gotta be careful with those cyans and magentas.  The first time I uploaded it, the pinks in his face were popping so much that I had to go back and desaturate them to this extremely vivid color.  But the cyans... well nothing i did could help them.

 Note to self, be wary of cyan.

   Not the best, but a fun way to spend the afternoon, hope you like it.  The keyword: SNOW

Illustration Friday: IMAGINATION

Illustration Friday has crept upon me once again, and I fear i will not have enough time to finish this one off by the Thursday night deadline.  I think I bit off more than i could chew with this one, although I like it enough to hopefully finish it at a later date.... hopefully.  That line's been said too many times in the past, and rarely ever been true.
  This was another wandering image.  I didn't have much of an idea when I started the drawing.  When I was done sketching though, this is what emerged.  It's a little more biological than I thought it would be.  At first, I figured it would be more of a light pattern blasting from the head, i guess that didn't come to pass.

   The key word here: Imagination.

IllustrationFriday: IDENTICAL

It seems that I can't stop drawing these Illustration Friday Drawings.  And though I've got a ton of stuff on my plate right now, lately I've had the strongest desires to do my own stuff.
  So, for the second week in a row, I'm turning back to Illustration friday to fulfill my whimseys. I'm pretty sure that this idea was already done a bunch of times over, and that the whole IF site if gonna be filled with a lot of "twins" drawings (well, and random drawings by jerks who just post whatever images they have while pretending to do the challenge).
  The first image that came to mind was the scary twins of the Shining. Yes, I know that most of the scariness is housed in their banality, but I wanted to add a bit more drama and otherworldly mystique.
  So, here you go.  Hope you like it, IF crowd.

Illustration Friday: TALL

It's been quite a while since I've done an Illustration Friday Drawing.  I honestly haven't had time.   I guess I still don't have the time, but I needed to get myself into a good drawing head space. So, what the heck.  might as well whip up something fast..... it would be fun.  I haven't been able to draw something "for fun" in quite some time.
  It used to be the case that I'd try to make all my Illustration Friday drawing refer back to a Greek Myth. The box just seemed a little too confining.  So, I just started drawing and let the my mind wander a little.  When I woke up, this guy was staring back at me, and I was half way through with coloring him.  I like to think that he's one of those whole grain fed viking kids whose parents moved to America when he was in middle school, so now he's a giant among dwarfs.

  The key word: Tall.

Illustration Friday: Spent

Spent! As in, I am spent. As in, after working on so many designs this month that i had to resort to Redbull in order to get them done, I am spent. As in, now that I've had two days of aimless rest, I still feel like hibernating.

Isn't it peculiar that your body can continue to run on all four cylinders until the point when all your duties have been met, and then it just collapses into a pile of weariness.

This weeks Illustration Friday word might've hit a little too close to home.

Illustration Friday: Racing

I haven't done an Illustration Friday drawing in months.... It's been a busy busy life. I guess I still am burning the candle at both ends.

I needed a break from the apparel designs for a few minutes, so i made this doodle on my computer. Right now I'm really intrigued by line screen half tones. I think they are sooooo cool. They are making it into all of my designs lately. Can't wait to feel like i have a handle on it.

Illustration Friday: Giant

This weeks Illustration Friday is another quick one. It's been crazy at the studio this week, so I don't have very much time for experiments, which stinks cause I got real excited to do something about GIANTS.

I tried to recall all of the giants that I could remember. The one that caught my interest was Orion. His story is so old and convoluted that there are quite a few versions of his life and death. From what i could deduce, Orion is a throw back to old PreAgricultural days; a wild hunter and protector of the wilderness. In most of the stories, he becomes blind and has to be led to Helios by a servant named Cedalion. That's the part that stood out to me, A huge Giant that became so helpless and lame that he needs to rely on a puny human in order to get healed. It reminds me of the fable of the lion and the mouse.... another classic.

Well, here's my attempt. I hope to finish this illustration soon.... unfortunately, right now it's more of a glorified color study.

Illustration Friday: Satellite

After last weeks time killer Paisley Illustrations, I sort of let this one slide a bit...

The Flies. I read this play in college. It's Sartre's version of Electra Story (girl who tries to kill her mother). When Electra and Orestes enter the town of their mother, the place is filled with mourning townspeople covered in flies. The swarms of flies are used to represent guilt and shame remaining from wrongs left unresolved. That image of flies hovering around the townspeople seems to be etched in my mind.

Does this work for describing the word Satellite? I hope so. Thanks for the challenge, Illustration Friday.

Illustration Friday: Paisley

"Paisley" turns out to be a fairly difficult word to illustrate. Especially if you want to add a narrative to the drawing. And if you add on another challenge – using a Greek Myth theme– it becomes are even more tough. A few things came to mind, but the one that seemed to fit the best was the Apple of the Hesperides. I hope that the paisley helps to make it look a bit more... magical. but i'm not quite sure i pulled this one off as well as i would've liked. But heck, the reason for doing Illustration Friday is really more about experimentation than beautiful drawings, right?

Illustration Friday: Ripple

Keeping with the theme, here's another Illustration Friday submission referencing a Greek Myth from Ovid.  This one is the story of Narcissus.  He stared into his reflection, captivated by his own visage. Lacking any other desire than to gaze at his own beauty, he refused to leave the side of the pond for days and weeks. Poor guy, withered away to nothing.

  Kind of reminds you of a modern day VideoGame Player who dies at their desk while playing Marathon stints of WOW, doesn't it.

The Word for this week's Challenge is: RIPPLE

Illustration Friday:Trail

Did you ever hear about what happened when Apollo let his bastard son drive the Chariot of the Sun across the skies?  Trouble.  That's what happened.  A trail of Destruction.  

  I have always liked Greek myth, especially Ovid's Metamorphoses.  For years I've been saying that I should draw some of the stories, I just never have.  Illustration Friday seemed like it would be the perfect chance to do so....when it fits....

  I decided on a looser coloring approach.  Most of the coloring comes from the initial sketch.  Then I went in later, after I'd finished the line drawing, and cleaned up some of the colors.

Illustration Friday:Slither

I can't say that it's the best work I've ever done.... but It's something. I've been thinking a lot about coloring and mood lately. So this time I chose to do some intentionally ugly colors. (I never get the chance on paying gigs) My idea for SLITHER was to try to capture that gross feeling of something wiggling around next to you, sort of like that Fear factor show.
Anyways. Here's my little Illustration Friday Experiment. I can't wait for next week.

In an attempt to have more fun with my illustration, and do something other than t shirt designs all day, I thought, "You know, Stephe, you should start doing some of these online call for entries. Live a little."
