It's raining buckets outside, I haven't gotten anyone Christmas Presents, and I'm working like mad on a project in order to get it done before visiting the soon-to-be in-laws. I wasn't feeling very christmassy until this morning.

I think this clip sort of explains my mood: trying to remember the "reason for the season" but it's been cut into pieces and covered over by a catchy snappy wall of sound, distorting the original meaning with fat beats and hand claps.

So, today i just finished a pretty long terms job. It was one of my bread-n-butter jobs for the past few months. The freelance lifestyle can be pretty crazy sometimes, and I don't think I'll ever get used to the amount of freedom it offers. So now that I'm finishing up with one client, I can't help but feel a little.... freaked out.

In order to commemorate today's news, I was going to post a David Bowie video for Changes. But right when I was about to search for it, I burst into song, "Everything's coming up Roses". I guess that better represents my mood today.

Spent! As in, I am spent. As in, after working on so many designs this month that i had to resort to Redbull in order to get them done, I am spent. As in, now that I've had two days of aimless rest, I still feel like hibernating.

Isn't it peculiar that your body can continue to run on all four cylinders until the point when all your duties have been met, and then it just collapses into a pile of weariness.

This weeks Illustration Friday word might've hit a little too close to home.

I haven't done an Illustration Friday drawing in months.... It's been a busy busy life. I guess I still am burning the candle at both ends.

I needed a break from the apparel designs for a few minutes, so i made this doodle on my computer. Right now I'm really intrigued by line screen half tones. I think they are sooooo cool. They are making it into all of my designs lately. Can't wait to feel like i have a handle on it.

In this case, they are mixing an inflight employee workout with mandatory air flight safety instructions, inflight entertainment, and extra ad revenue from music publishers. Brilliant.

"For the life of me, I will always find that the Golden Section remains illusive. I used to try to be more deliberate about using it in my compositions, but never quite got the hang of it. During one of my first seasons at Zoo York, I used it as the basis for a Blue Print inspired pattern.

This design was never made. It was supposed to be on a double layered windbreaker, the black was to be printed on a transparent top layer, with the blue printed under it. In the end, the production cost was astronomical, so it was canceled. :(

I was also in the middle of sketching out the Hooper Heroes comic book, so there are a few subi symbols hiding in the drawing..... they're really, really hard to find though.

"You're in our talons now, and we're never letting go." -this is the refrain that was stuck in my head while I was making this design.

I've been doing a quite a few bird drawings lately for different brands. It's a little mini trend, i guess.

This one that just came out. It's the famous birds of brooklyn. A while ago, a crate of Monk Parrots broke apart and the parrots escaped into the wilds of Kings County. They've been thriving here ever since. I often see them chirping in the trees while walking through Park Slope.

Illustration Friday: Giant

This weeks Illustration Friday is another quick one. It's been crazy at the studio this week, so I don't have very much time for experiments, which stinks cause I got real excited to do something about GIANTS.

I tried to recall all of the giants that I could remember. The one that caught my interest was Orion. His story is so old and convoluted that there are quite a few versions of his life and death. From what i could deduce, Orion is a throw back to old PreAgricultural days; a wild hunter and protector of the wilderness. In most of the stories, he becomes blind and has to be led to Helios by a servant named Cedalion. That's the part that stood out to me, A huge Giant that became so helpless and lame that he needs to rely on a puny human in order to get healed. It reminds me of the fable of the lion and the mouse.... another classic.

Well, here's my attempt. I hope to finish this illustration soon.... unfortunately, right now it's more of a glorified color study.

New York used to be a Breeding Ground for Unique Individuals who defied explanation. They were the type of souls who made you realize just how freakishly normal you really are.
I first heard of RammellZee while watching a graffiti documentary. Even though the film was filled with a lot of rebellious street kids, RammellZee still out shined all of them. This dude just lives on a different planet than the rest of us.
I don't know, but you gotta kind of envy a guy like that who can be so true to himself.

Okay. Okay. So it's not all bad. But what's with the shoes? honestly. They look like they were made especially for people who don't know how to draw feet well. I mean look at those things. They have to be the clunkiest looking wedges i've ever seen. I'd comment about the early 90's jean jacket and body suit, but I don't have the energy for such a rant.

Yeah... somehow I don't think this costume change is gonna last.

After last weeks time killer Paisley Illustrations, I sort of let this one slide a bit...

The Flies. I read this play in college. It's Sartre's version of Electra Story (girl who tries to kill her mother). When Electra and Orestes enter the town of their mother, the place is filled with mourning townspeople covered in flies. The swarms of flies are used to represent guilt and shame remaining from wrongs left unresolved. That image of flies hovering around the townspeople seems to be etched in my mind.

Does this work for describing the word Satellite? I hope so. Thanks for the challenge, Illustration Friday.

"Paisley" turns out to be a fairly difficult word to illustrate. Especially if you want to add a narrative to the drawing. And if you add on another challenge – using a Greek Myth theme– it becomes are even more tough. A few things came to mind, but the one that seemed to fit the best was the Apple of the Hesperides. I hope that the paisley helps to make it look a bit more... magical. but i'm not quite sure i pulled this one off as well as i would've liked. But heck, the reason for doing Illustration Friday is really more about experimentation than beautiful drawings, right?

What defines Creativity?

I feel like I've had this conversation many times before. A bunch of us artists will be sitting at a bar or a party or a conference or something, questioning the finer aspects of art (What exactly is art? What is creativity? What's the difference between being inspired by a work and stealing it?) when the outcast of the group will say, "Why are we wasting our time talking about this stuff? Do you thing plumbers and steal workers sit around talking about the essence of plumbing?" Then, hopefully the rest of the group will ignore the comment and continue to dissect the finer points of the creative spirit.

That being said, It looks like these builders figured out a way of embodying my thoughts about Creativity: Do the best you can do with what you got.

Guess what I just watched tonight?
God Bless the Brooklyn Public Library. They have the craziest selection of movies at their local branches. The BPL is my own public Netflix.

The girl in this movie, Linda, is amazing. She steals the movie away from Sam Shepard and Richard Gere. If I could find a stripped down version of the film that's comprised solely of her voice overs, I would watch that thing everyday.

Keeping with the theme, here's another Illustration Friday submission referencing a Greek Myth from Ovid. This one is the story of Narcissus. He stared into his reflection, captivated by his own visage. Lacking any other desire than to gaze at his own beauty, he refused to leave the side of the pond for days and weeks. Poor guy, withered away to nothing.

Kind of reminds you of a modern day VideoGame Player who dies at their desk while playing Marathon stints of WOW, doesn't it.

Illustration Friday:Trail

Did you ever hear about what happened when Apollo let his bastard son drive the Chariot of the Sun across the skies? Trouble. That's what happened. A trail of Destruction.

I have always liked Greek myth, especially Ovid's Metamorphoses. For years I've been saying that I should draw some of the stories, I just never have. Illustration Friday seemed like it would be the perfect chance to do so....when it fits....

I decided on a looser coloring approach. Most of the coloring comes from the initial sketch. Then I went in later, after I'd finished the line drawing, and cleaned up some of the colors.

Continuing in my talent for drawing Octopi, here's the latest addition to the Portfolio.

This graphic was surprisingly fast to make. I was really impressed with how it turned out. It's always nice when the client likes your first sketch. They only wanted me to add some stuff to the bottom, which turned out to be an excellent suggestion. Thanks a lot, People of Exact Science.

A few months ago I received a Black Sketchbook from a friend of mine. Now, I think I have about 20 or 30 sketchbooks already, and almost all of them are about 40% full. No matter how small they are, somehow I can never get to the last page of any of them. What's the deal with that?????
So, when I got this new one, I decided that I would make a mission out of finishing it at soon as possible. I wasn't going to concern myself with how well every sketch was done, just so long as the book was finished. On top of that, I added another rule. I would use the same pen for the whole book. My pen of choice: a Pentel Brush Pen. -i would like to them, but i can't find them online.

anyways..... without further ado, Here's the meager beginning page of the sketchbook. Look for better pages coming soon.

I can't say that it's the best work I've ever done.... but It's something. I've been thinking a lot about coloring and mood lately. So this time I chose to do some intentionally ugly colors. (I never get the chance on paying gigs) My idea for SLITHER was to try to capture that gross feeling of something wiggling around next to you, sort of like that Fear factor show.
Anyways. Here's my little Illustration Friday Experiment. I can't wait for next week.

A while ago, I became really fascinated with Octopi. I started drawing them after Matt Tapia at Fu Manchu asked me to do an Octopus and Carp design for him. Now I've done quite a few. They are really fun! Anyways.... I wanted to keep on with the trend, so i did this drawing for CoveredBlog. Its a more intense version of Super Adventure Comic #43. Dang, I wish i could do that. Ever since i was a kid I've wanted to swing from the trees. When I was a kid, I used to repel down from the high branches. It smarted something fierce when the branches broke (and the cradle did fall).

This guy has taken the art of climbing to a new level. He's bested the monkeys at their own games, like Tarzan or Kintarou.(Check out 0:30-0:40. WTF? Who taught him that trick??) Dang, I wish that Rousseau was right, that man is a noble savage. There's something magical about those Lost Boy stories. They always draw me in.

Though Tapout has neither confirmed nor denied that they are looking to replace Mr. Slice, many new contenders are vying for the position. Ok, so now you might be wondering, "Hey Stephe, WTF? You watch MMA? You don't seem like that kind of person." You're right. I'm not. But I've started working on some MMA inspired graphics.

So, in order to get the style right, I started reading about the players and watching the Youtube clips. I think the main thing that I learned is that MMA fighters are really tough. And their graphics for their shirts need to be really tough.... and sincere. Sincerely tough.
This was one of the first ones I did, but certainly not the last. I think i did this about a year ago. I didn't quite get the "sincerely tough" thing down, but it's a good first attempt. It took forever to ink everything. And then it took just as long to clean it all up to print. Can't complain though. It was a lot of fun to do some this ornate. I got to zone out and listen to books on tape.

The Ripper!

So people have been asking me, "Stephe, Whatcha been up to lately?". And I say, "Well, it takes about a year for my designs to be public. But here, this is something that I did a year ago."

This one just hit the floor, A good old fashioned Skull shirt. They just don't go out of style if you work with skateboarding companies. This one is a reinterpretation of the classic Powell graphic, The Ripper. Often imitated, never outdone.

So, I've been moonlighting as a Comicbook artist and Viewmaster creator for the past year and a half. Sufjan asked me to do a lot of work on his mammoth BQE project. It's finally coming out!!!! Check out the Press release:

Sufjan Stevens is proud to present The BQE, a cinematic suite inspired by the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and the Hula-Hoop. Commissioned by Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), The BQE was originally performed in the Howard Gilman Opera House in celebration of the 25th anniversary Next Wave Festival in October of 2007.

The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway is an incidental 12.7 miles of urban roadway built over the course of several decades (1939-1964), spear-headed by the master architect Robert Moses to accommodate for the increase of commercial and commuter traffic in New York City's outer boroughs. The roadway was a painstaking piecemeal project, poorly planned, badly built, and relentlessly encumbered by the obvious obstacles of the era: red tape, neighborhood protests, World War II, and a congested borough whose sequestering layout proved ill-fitting for the automobile. The resulting expressway-a pockmarked, serpentine, congested BQE-has become one of Brooklyn's most notable icons of urban blight. And, for Sufjan Stevens, an object of unmitigated inspiration.

The official album release of The BQE follows nearly two years after its original performance at BAM, providing the songwriter (and his various collaborators) ample time to wrestle out all the thematic incarnations of the project, and to attempt an appropriation of Wagner's Gesamtkunstwerk ("total work"). The resulting album might be best described as a grand creative franchise-incorporating movie, symphony, comic book, dissertation, photography, graphic design, and a 3-D Viewmaster® reel-in which a songwriter's interrogation of one of New York's ugliest landmarks expands athletically to forums and formulas outside of the song itself. In fact, the BQE is everything but a song.

First and foremost, The BQE is a self-made home-movie documentation, exhibiting how all the architectural colors of Brooklyn and Queens are fabulously intersected by this ramshackle artery of highway traffic. Shot renegade style on do-it-yourself film cameras, the animated footage of grid-lock crisscrossing the brick and mortar of Brooklyn flickers and cascades Koyaanisqatsi-style on three simultaneous screens. The 16mm cinematography (heroically shot by Reuben Kleiner on a 1960s Bolex) utilizes time-lapse photography, in-camera editing, slow motion, and post-production mirror effects to transform urban blight into a splendor of graphic compositions.

The BQE is also accompanied by an idiosyncratic musical soundtrack (composed by Stevens for band and chamber orchestra), evoking a romanticized musical choreography of perpetual motion vs. gridlock. Borrowing variously from Gershwin, Terry Riley, Charles Ives, and Autechre (to name a few), the music showcases skittish woodwinds wrestling out impressionist articulation (in 7/8) and imperial brass anthems evoking various incarnations of the music of the automobile.

The BQE further extends its mythology by anthropomorphizing the expressway and its theoretical conceits into a 40-page comic book (cover by Matt Loux, masthead by Christian Acker), in which three extra-terrestrial superhero sisters (Botanica, Quantus, and Electress) use hula-hoops to combat the "the Messiah of Civic Projects," Captain Moses, and his totalitarian social architecture. The comic book, written by Stevens and gorgeously drawn, colored, and inked by longtime friend and collaborator Stephen Halker, visualizes in graphic form many of the political motifs of the movie and soundtrack: mid-century urban theory, modernism, post-modernism, hoop dynamics, and the spiritual practice of Subud.

By incorporating an anachronistic graphic novel, the album utilizes artifacts from the Golden Age of the American highway (1930s-1960s). This also inspired the inclusion of a stereoscopic Viewmaster® reel. Seven 3-D images-also created by Stephen Halker-are meant to accompany the seven movements of The BQE. While an ostensibly gimmicky object of kitsch, the 3-D reel, upon closer inspection, becomes a fitting metaphor for the thematic premises posed by the BQE: its circular geometry mirrors the hula hoop, its numerology (seven divisions) runs parallel to the seven movements of the musical suite, and its historical circumstances shed light on the modernist themes of the album. Originally unveiled at the World's Fair of 1939 in Flushing, Queens, the Viewmaster promoted 3-D panoramic illusions of the American landscape (the Grand Canyon, the Redwoods, New York City, for instance), advertising various tourist destinations as a way to inspire American drivers to boldly go (via automobile and super highway) where no man has gone before. Incidentally, the first portion of the BQE included the Kosciusko Bridge, connecting the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens over Newtown Creek as an efficient means of funneling tourist traffic to the World's Fair. From this reading, the BQE and the Viewmaster reel are odd accomplices in the modernist conspiracy to mobilize Americans nationwide.

Many of these thematic abstractions are rendered as a meandering social treatise-via prose-poem psychobabble liner notes by Sufjan Stevens. In this case, the songwriter borrows from multiple theoretical sources to evoke how the vainglorious battle between the "Artist" and the "Object of Inspiration" ultimately leads to self-absorption, existential exhaustion, and morbid futility in the Finding The Right Metaphor. For Stevens, this metaphor (in its struggle to creatively render an object as irreducible as the BQE) expands into a multitude of forms and figures, like a shape-shifting chimera of infinite significance-resulting in an album that refuses to be just one thing.

The BQE is available as a double-disc format (CD/DVD), which includes the original 16mm/8mm film (in widescreen "triptych" display), the original motion picture soundtrack, a 40-page booklet (with extensive liner notes and photographs), and the stereoscopic image reel (playable in all View-MasterÂ® viewers).

The limited edition vinyl is available as a double gatefold and includes the soundtrack on 180-gram vinyl, a large-scale 32-page booklet with liner notes and photographs, and a black-and-white version of the 40-page Hooper Heroes comic book.

Through a myriad of miscommunications, I pumped out this illustration so fast that i didn't have time to get sick of it. From what i could gather from the Art Director at Complex magazine, January 9th is National Play God Day.???? (who knew?). The tag mentioned that it would be really peachy keen to use your godly powers to clothe the hungry or feed the naked. But instead of being so altruistic, it would be better to use your infinite powers to keep your girlfriend from finding out about your infidelity.
Sounds like a waste of Power to me. People keep up this miserable charade for years without the aid of infinite abilities.

My friend Janie sent me this post about a Floridian Feral Child named Danielle. Police rescued her from a filth ridden excuse for a shack where she lived a life of neglect. She was so feral that she wouldn't make eye contact, didn't react to heat or cold or pain, wouldn't vocalize, and didn't understand the concept of nodding "yes" or "no".
It's an amazing story that I couldn't stop reading. I drew this sketch soon after reading the story.

The ZOO Artist Series boards just came out! Mine was chosen for Zered Bassett. I thought it would be funny to use some of my Scientific Illustration techniques on a cockroach, but all the guts are completely imaginary.... Now that i think of it, that's not very different from my regular Scientific work...... completely imaginary.

as a side note: I did a lot of research for this piece and found out:
* A cockroach can live for up to 30 days with its head missing.
* There is not way of telling if a cockroach has emotions, because it's exoskeleton prevents it from expressing them.

Here's another design I just cranked out for Fumanchu. I always wanted to have a reason to do this kind of Japanese tattoo looking stuff. I'm glad I got the chance.
I've started doing my sketches in photoshop, for i find it easier to keep track of my chaotic sketches when I can change colors and densities so easily. My pencil and pen sketches become such a mess of discussion that usually I can't figure out what I was trying to say.

I've been fascinated with synesthesia for years now. It's said that you are either born with it, or you're not. Unfortunately, I stubbornly believe that any seed of a talent is able to be nurtured.... Here's to hoping.

I know that there isn't an orthodox color to letter system. And, in the same vein, no agreed upon color to sound relation, but here is my first venture into the concept. It's one of the common color scales from C to B.

I forgot that a film crew was ever in my office space. Although (or maybe because) I'm rather camera shy, I'm usually seen only in the background; doodling on a lightbox or swordfighting. We took down a lot of the stuff on the walls that might be incriminating, but somehow the "I LOVE PETE" sign made out of rose pedals still managed to make quite a cameo.... what a mad house

This Tuesday, June 17th, I will be joining in the My Brightest Diamond CD release party by painting faces. Last week MBD played to a crowded house at Other Music. During the show, Shara announced that she already had circus performers and a puppeteer, but was missing a face painter. After the show, that positions was filled..... by yours truly.
